Idaho ODP players Sawyer Luthy (2003) and Cooper Prohaska (2005) are headed to Scotland and Ireland April 5 to 14 after being identified and invited to compete with the West Region ODP team.
Luthy and Prohaska both singled out that playing competitive soccer on an international level is a great opportunity for not only traveling, but for the chance to learn from other teams and coaches.
"I am looking forward to playing against professional youth academy teams such as Arsenal and Liverpool,” Luthy said. “The competition will be amazing. I've never been to Europe and I am excited about traveling to Scotland and Ireland.”
Sawyer’s parents, Erin and Lara Luthy, are excited for this opportunity for him as well.
"We have enjoyed the experience he has had with ODP,” Erin and Lara said. “It has given him exposure to a variety of top-level coaches and he has made new friendships along the way. We are excited for him to travel abroad playing against some of the best youth teams in Europe. It will be a experience he will never forget."
While Luthy plays for the 2004 Idaho ODP team, he plays for the Boise Timbers 2003s. Prohaska plays for the 2005 Idaho ODP team and for the 2005 Timbers North squad.
Prohaska’s parents, Benjamin and Desiree Prohaska, said that ODP has been enriching to the overall soccer experience of both of their sons. Their older son, Drake Prohaska, who plays for the Idaho ODP 2002 boys team, has also traveled as a part of the Region IV team. Cooper is following along in his brother’s footsteps.
“I am honored and excited to represent Idaho at the ODP Region IV international trip to Scotland and Ireland,” Cooper said. “I look forward to the opportunity to learn from a great coach and to compete internationally.”
ODP is a tiered system, with players competing for spots at the State level, then to a Regional level, and then ends with players hoping to be identified for US National Teams.
The Olympic Development Program (ODP) was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels.
